The Power of Giving Back: How WiMEF is Building a Stronger Manufacturing Workforce
As Giving Tuesday approaches, the Women in Manufacturing Education Foundation (WiMEF) is reflecting on what it truly means to give back—and why investing in women’s education and career development is one of the most transformative forms of philanthropy today.
To explore this, we sat down with Michelle Blackford, WiMEF’s Director of Philanthropy, whose perspective highlights not only the power of giving, but the profound ripple effects it creates across companies, communities, and the entire manufacturing ecosystem.
Redefining What “Giving Back” Means Today
As Michelle reflected on the role of philanthropy today, she noted that giving back has taken on a broader and more dynamic meaning.
“Giving back today goes beyond traditional charity. It’s about creating meaningful engagement opportunities that help our members, corporate partners and donors feel connected to our mission. We want them to feel empowered to share our story and be able to see real impact—and for us to communicate back to them the impact that their gift is making.”
In other words, giving isn’t just transactional—it's relational. It’s about connection, engagement, and ensuring that supporters see the tangible difference their contributions create.
Why Investing in People Is Philanthropy
Michelle emphasized that investing in people—through education, skill-building, and career development—creates long-term, self-sustaining impact. When individuals gain access to learning and support, they aren’t just helped in the moment; they’re equipped for lasting growth.
“We are focused on an individual’s education and career development, and we believe those two things are among the most powerful forms of philanthropy. They help people become self-sustaining and support long-term growth rather than offering only a short-term solution. We’re equipping individuals with the tools and confidence to transform their futures and be ready for the next evolution of change.”
This philosophy guides WiMEF’s work. By providing leadership development, professional learning opportunities, and greater access to educational resources, WiMEF invests in potential—opening doors, building confidence, and empowering women to advance in their careers.
“I love philanthropy because it is, in many ways, a form of education. It allows us to share a mission, articulate a purpose, and invite people to participate in ways that are meaningful to them. When someone’s personal goals align with our mission, it becomes a mutually rewarding experience.”
When Women Grow, Entire Organizations Grow With Them
The ripple effects of professional development are immediate and far-reaching.
Michelle shared stories from recent interactions—including a visit to a corporate partner—where women described how WiMEF programs reshaped their confidence, aspirations, and careers.
“When a person gains access to leadership development, she brings new perspective. That often leads to stronger teams, more inclusive decision making and greater innovation.”
These graduates often become role models themselves, inspiring colleagues and helping build cultures where women see clear pathways to advancement.
One participant even told Michelle that if it weren’t for the Leadership Institute, she never would have pursued her master’s degree—a testament to how transformative visibility, support, and encouragement can be.
Michelle said the impact runs both ways.
“We go into these spaces thinking, I’m going to make a difference. But the truth is, I’m usually the one who leaves transformed.”
How Businesses and Individuals Can Build a Culture of Continuous Learning
While financial support is foundational, Michelle noted that partnership and engagement are equally influential.
Companies that champion WiM’s mission help create environments where individuals feel supported, encouraged, and seen.
“These companies partner with us in hosting learning experiences through our Virtual Learning Series. They encourage staff to go to WiM’s SUMMIT, to participate in these programs. And they've created opportunities for career paths for their employees.”
Every intentional act—from sponsoring programming to celebrating employee milestones—helps reinforce a culture where professional growth is expected, supported, and celebrated.
Removing Barriers So More Women Can Rise
Cost, time, and awareness remain some of the greatest barriers to advancement.
“So many women, especially those early in their careers, don't see or know about opportunities for advancement.”
Awareness is a powerful equalizer. When women see role models—board members, leaders, and peers—they gain a clearer picture of what’s possible.
Through our programming and intentional outreach, WiMEF is committed to doing exactly that.
Michelle pointed to a metaphor from Gretchen Moore, Executive Director of WiMEF, that sums it up simply and powerfully: “We want to send the elevator back down.”
A Stronger Future Starts With an Empowered Workforce Today
Michelle closed with a reminder of why manufacturing remains essential to strong economies—and why supporting women in this field strengthens entire communities.
“We can all agree that a skilled, diverse, and empowered workforce is the foundation of a resilient economy. And manufacturing is the backbone of our economy. So again, supporting women and helping women advance in those positions strengthens not only the talent pipeline, but drives innovation and builds stronger communities overall.”
This Giving Tuesday (December 2), the Women in Manufacturing Education Foundation invites everyone—companies, partners, members, and supporters—to join in building a future where everyone in manufacturing has access to growth, opportunity, and a thriving career path.
